Great news about Gardner Village

Amy Smith, Ogden Standard Examiner

Gardner Village is a charming little area for good food and not your run-of-the-mill shopping stores. A Historic Landmark located in West Jordan, this quiet little “village” was once a bustling area with Archibald Gardner’s flour mill, a mattress factory, broom factory, blacksmith shop, and general store.

The old flour mill has been converted to a restaurant and furniture and gift store, while the restored pioneer-era cabins and buildings are now quaint retail stores.

It is a great place to shop if you are tired of the same old mall stuff.

Gardner Village is named after Archibald Gardner, one of the early Mormon settlers that followed Brigham Young into Utah in 1847.

Born on September 2, 1814 in Kilsyth, Scotland; Gardner built his first mill at 17 under his father’s supervision. In 1837, he ventured out to build his own gristmill at what is now known as Alvinston, Ontario. According to Wikipedia, Gardner built 23 mills in his lifetime and is credited for bringing about the towns of Alvinston, Ontario and West Jordan, Utah.

Gristmills often provided the building block to develop a community, such was the case at Bingham Creek in West Jordan. According to the Gardner Village website, the Gardners and their crew constructed a sawmill and gristmill in 1853. Workers and their families built cabins near these mills and factories, creating the early foundation of the city of West Jordan.
